Define recode (Extracts)

Recoding means to create a new variable that contains a redistribution of the items from an existing variable.

For example: In an AGE variable, you might wish to take all the codes for subjects under the age of 18 and recode them as the new code CHILDREN. A new variable would be created containing the new code.

New variable name

New variable name initially shows the original name with a number appended to it. You can accept the default or enter a new name.

Note: The new variable will appear in alphabetical order in the same category as the original. In most cases it is best to accept the default name, because it is guaranteed to be unique.

New codes

New codes is initially an empty field. Once you have saved a new code it will appear here. You can use the Edit and Delete buttons to modify or remove a saved code.

New code definition

New code

Enter a unique code to identify the new code you are creating.

Available codes

Displays the codes for all the items in the original variable. Select the items you want to recode and click Add.

Add

Moves the selected items from Available codes to the Members area. This adds them to the recoded field.

Remove

Removes the selected member from the recoded field and returns it to Available codes.

Use as is

Retains the same code in the recoded field as in the original field. The code is removed from the dialog box.

Add remaining

Assigns all the remaining codes in the Available codes area to the current code.

Note: All items must be accounted for. The new variable cannot be created as long as any codes remain in the Available codes area.

Members

Displays the codes that have been assigned to the new code.

Save new code

Saves the code. The saved code appears in the New codes area.

Apply

Creates the new recoded variable. The recoded variable appears in alphabetical order in the list of variables on the Extract tab. Clicking the name of a recoded variable opens its Show recode page.
